Crochet Flower with 8 Petals
This free crochet flower pattern makes up fairly quickly and creates a large flower that would make a great addition to a crochet hat, purse or sweater.
The size of your crochet flower will beĀ completely dependent upon the thickness of the yarn you use. My flower was made using a typical 4-ply worsted acrylic and is around 4 1/2 inches wide.
My test flower used a light, weight-sport yarn and was a little less than 3 inches wide.
It does have one stitch that might be new to some but that stitch is based off of the double crochet stitch and is very easy to make.
Making Your 8-Petaled Crochet Flower
Whether you use the magic circle technique or a more traditional method, this pattern starts with a central circle of one chain of 3 stitches and 8 double crochet stitches.
Once the circle has been closed, follow the rest of the pattern. You can make this base circle in one color and the petals in another or make the entire flower using the same yarn.
Crochet Flower Pattern
Petal 1: chain 3, two double crochet in the next stitch on the ring, chain 3 and turn the piece. Your previous row should have three stitches. Crochet two double crochet in the center stitch of the row and one double crochet in one of the loops of the original chain 3. (Make this stitch into one of the loops of the chain. If you make it into the chain 3 space your flower petal will not look as nice.) Chain 3 and turn.
Here’s the part where we are going to use a different stitch…
Yarn over the hook. Insert hook into 2nd stitch in the previous row. Yarn over and pull through the stitch. At this point you should have 4 loops on your crochet hook. Yarn over and pull through the first two loops.
Leaving those two loops on the hook, yarn over and insert the hook into the 3rd stitch of the previous row. Yarn over and pull through the previous row’s stitch. You should have 4 loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through two of the loops. Yarn over once more and pull through all of the 3 remaining loops on your hook.
This stitch is called the popcorn stitch. The popcorn stitch is most typically made using 5 long stitches but for our flowers we will only require 2. For the rest of this pattern, I will refer to this stitch as a two-stitch popcorn stitch.
Chain 2 and slip stitch into the last stitch in the previous row/the chain 3. Again, go through loops, not the chain 3 gap.
Make 4 slip stitches down the side of the petal to the circle and finally make a slip stitch back into the same stitch where you made the original pair of double crochet stitches.
Crochet Flower Petals 2 - 8: Chain 3 and make two double crochet in the next stitch around the ring.
Chain 3 and turn.
Just like with the first petal, you should have a row of three stitches. Make a pair of double crochet stitches in the 2nd stitch and one double crochet in one of the loops of the chain 3 that is creating the third stitch of the row. (Again, make sure that you are stitching into loops and not the chain 3 gap.)
Chain 3 and turn. Make a 2-stitch popcorn stitch in the 2nd and 3rd stitches of the previous row. Chain 2 and slip stitch into the the chain 3 from the previous row (not the gap).
Make 4 slip stitches down the side of the petal to the circle. Make a final slip stitch into the stitch where you made the original pair of double crochet stitches to make the petal.
Repeat until you have a total of 8 petals.
After making the slip stitch into the double crochet pair at the base of the last petal, make a slip stitch into the stitch on the circle where the first petal begins. End off.
To make your crochet flower petals more consistently spaced, you might need to work the tails of your yarn to tie the first and last petals slightly together.
Crochet Flower Finishing Suggestions
I tried making a finished crochet edge and while it did make the edges of the petals look smoother, it ruined the overall look of the flower. It took away the slight curl on the top of the petals. Depending upon how you plan on using your crochet 8-petal flower, you might want to give it a try anyway.
Never crochet directly into one of the chain 3 gaps. It will only exaggerate the gap and cause your petals to be misshapen.
You could also replace all of the double crochet stitches with half double crochet stitches. Keep the top row of the petals the same but replace all of the other chain 3s with chain 2s and use three slip stitches down the side of the petals to create a flower with shorter petals.
